HWL makes further commitment to Hutchison Chevening Scholarships

(Hong Kong, 9 July 2008) Hutchison Whampoa Limited ("HWL") has pledged a further sponsorship of GBP564,000 to the Hutchison Chevening Scholarships, bringing the company's donation to this prestigious scholarships scheme to a total of over GBP3 million to date.

The latest commitment was announced as HWL Deputy Chairman Victor Li greeted and met about 60 Hutchison Chevening scholars at a reception, joined by Alderman David Lewis, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Andrew Seaton, British Consul-General, and HWL's Deputy Group Managing Director Susan Chow.

The new contribution will fund 75 outstanding young postgraduates from Hong Kong and Mainland China to pursue their further studies in Cambridge and major British universities and institutions this Summer.

Commenting on the Hutchison Group's support to the Chevening programme, Mr Li said, "HWL has long been a staunch supporter of the scholarships scheme and we are very pleased to see that many young talents are eager to equip themselves with higher education and have the visions to contribute to the community."

The Lord Mayor thanked HWL for the company's ongoing support of the scholarships scheme. Congratulating the scholars, he said, "The transferable skills and knowledge you have learned, or will have learned, in the UK will help you transform China as it continues to become a larger presence on the world stage."

Mr Seaton paid tribute to the support the scheme has received from HWL in the form of Hutchison Chevening Scholarships. "The partnership between the Chevening programme and Hutchison Whampoa has been an outstanding success. Hutchison Whampoa's very generous contribution has been a crucial factor in expanding the scheme in Hong Kong and Mainland China," Mr Seaton said. "It has provided a significant number of talented individuals with new opportunities for development, which will enable them to contribute so much more to Hong Kong and China in the future."

To date, the Hutchison Chevening scholarships have allowed more than 420 scholars from Hong Kong and the Mainland to pursue further studies in the UK since the scheme began in 2002.
