HIT and Orange team up to offer Hong Kong's first Mobile Terminal Message service
a more flexible and convenient way to receive terminal information via mobile phones

[Hong Kong - 18th October 2000] Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) and Orange have joined forces to offer the territory's first Mobile Terminal Message service. The new service commencing 24th October 2000 allows tractor drivers to obtain terminal information such as container movement instruction through their mobile phones, providing them with a more speedy and efficient way to complete the gate processes. Orange is the first operator in Hong Kong to offer this new service which is available for both Orange dualband and cdma users.

New CMS Service provides faster and efficient container movement instruction

As the industry's first, the Mobile Terminal Message offers tractor drivers a new Mobile Container Movement Slip (CMS) service and information on special operational arrangements. The Mobile CMS service allows drivers to receive short messages on tractors pick-up and grounding location with their handsets. With this new service, the tractor drivers can shorten their waiting time for the notification of container location as they no longer have to physically collect such information at HIT's on-site CMS Dispatch Office. It is estimated that the tractor turnaround time can be reduced by 10%, which helps to relieve the traffic congestion in the container yard.

Information on special operational arrangements just at fingertips

In addition to the CMS messages, tractor drivers can also obtain other messages such as special operational arrangements due to typhoons. With this new service, tractor drivers can keep well informed of the delivery of their containers easily through their mobile phones.

Managing Director of HIT, Mr Eric Ip says, "The Mobile Terminal Message service allows information to be transmitted and displayed on the tractor driver's mobile phones, providing pick-up/grounding locations, as well as HIT terminal conditions - such as typhoons that may be affecting terminal operations. With WAP technology on the verge of becoming commonplace, the service is at the vanguard of a future revolution in the way information may be relayed from the terminal to its users."

Deputy Managing Director and Sales and Marketing Director of Hutchison Telecom, Mr Stephen Ngan says, "We are excited to bring this new customized corporate applications to HIT by leveraging our proven expertise and leading-edge technology. It not only helps to enhance communications with customers, but also speeds up operational efficiency and effectiveness. As the leader in the development of advanced mobile services, Hutchison Telecom is always dedicated to providing our corporate clients with flawless, cost-effective communications solutions for all their business needs."
