Hutchison Telecom, Motorola & Sun Microsystems
Jointly Organise the "J2ME Open"

Competition seeks to boost local telecommunications industry
by encouraging creative J2ME designs

HONG KONG, 19 July, 2001 - Hutchison Telecom, Motorola and Sun Microsystems today jointly announced the launch of the "J2ME Open", a competition encouraging talents to submit innovative designs using Java technology. The initiative aims to boost the local telecommunications industry and foster technology growth, and thus reinforce Hong Kong's leadership position among international telecommunications markets.

J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) technology specifically addresses the vast range of consumer and embedded electronics products, which covers commodities such as smart cards and Java phones all the way to other appliances as powerful as a computer. Like the other editions of Java, the J2ME platform maintains the built-in consistency across products in terms of running anywhere, anytime, over any device. This is the key quality the technology has become famous for.

Moving Hong Kong's telecom industry forward

The 21st century is witnessing the fast evolution of the knowledge-based economy. Professionals are in high demand throughout industry, especially in the telecommunications sector. By creating an environment for the development of advanced technology, the "J2ME Open" offers a valuable opportunity for technologically-skilled individuals to prove their potential and apply their creativity.

Mr. Stephen Ngan, Deputy Managing Director and Sales and Marketing Director of Hutchison Telecom said, "J2ME technology complemented with Java handset will provide the richest mobile infotainment and the most interactive multimedia services to our users. We believe that with enhanced security levels for data transmission, users can further manage their business, conduct transactions and acquire real-time information via their mobile phones with convenience. A greater variety of mobile communication services will also be available to enrich the quality of their lives. As the leading mobile service provider, and the pioneer in developing new technologies and innovative services in Hong Kong, Hutchison Telecom has great pleasure in organising the 'J2ME Open' with a dedication to lead Hong Kong's telecommunications industry into a new era."

Mr. Terence Ma, Director of Business Development and Strategy, End-to-End Solutions of Motorola Asia Pacific Ltd. said, "Motorola is highly committed to the development of the J2ME platform. We are one of the first to introduce J2ME-enabled communication devices to the market - iDEN i85s, i50sx and the new A6288 due out by end of this month. Accompanying the A6288 launch we have initiated www.mymobilesoft.com, a website providing consumer downloads and developer uploads for sale of J2ME software applications. Motorola will contribute its knowledge and experience in J2ME technology to simplify the development of mobile software and further open embedded device markets to applications developers. We believe the market opportunity is tremendous and intend to continue our leadership in the advancement of J2ME technology in mobile communications products."

"Adoption and development of Java technology is growing at an unprecedented rate with more than three million J2ME-enabled wireless handsets already in circulation. With annual production of Java cell phones predicted to reach 20 million by year end, there's a huge opportunity for applications developers," said Danny Tam, Hong Kong General Manager of Sun Microsystems."

As part of the "J2ME Open", an interactive seminar focusing on Java technology will be held in August 2001. Industry experts will share their valuable experience and ensure participants gain a deeper understanding of how new technology can be deployed. Interested parties should visit the official website at www.j2meopen.com for technical advice and to make use of a forum, design tool-kits and a simulator.
