Hutchison 3G Austria completes acquisition of Orange Austria

  • Closing of acquisition after approval of all relevant authorities completed on 3.1.2013
  • 3 able to operate as a stronger player and third largest operator in the Austrian mobile market
  • Growth strategy prepares the ground for rapid roll out of LTE

Hutchison 3G Austria (H3G), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa Limited, completed with its closing of all contractual formalities on 3 January 2013, its acquisition of the whole business of Orange Austria from its previous owners Mid Europa Partners and France Telecom-Orange. This step also represents the completion of a long drawn-out takeover process, following the approval of all of the relevant Austrian and European authorities.

With this acquisition, Hutchison 3G Austria has become the third largest mobile operator in Austria. This step also allows the company to pursue with renewed energy the active and successful growth strategy it has adopted in the past. The company is committed to building further on its strong record of customer service in providing high-quality voice, Internet and mobile multimedia services. H3G is now a stronger market player, able to challenge the established mobile operators even more intensively than it has until now. In doing so, it will ensure that Austrian consumers continue to benefit from the best value for money in the market.

As part of the overall transaction, some frequencies, base stations and the mobile phone provider Yesss!, as well as certain other intellectual property of Orange Austria will be sold to Telekom Austria.

"We are delighted that, after undergoing a lengthy regulatory process, we have finally been able to close this acquisition", 3 CEO Jan Trionow commented. We can now get down to focusing all our efforts on playing a leading role in developing the future of the Austrian mobile market. I am particularly looking forward to working, with the combined talents and commitment of both existing and new colleagues in the company, to push forward with building a nationwide LTE network in Austria within the next two years. This will enable us to further strengthen our position as the operator with the best network in the country".

Along with H3G's existing customers, all Orange customers will be able to benefit from 3's commitment to providing high-quality, high-speed and high-reliability mobile Internet access, while offering the best value for money. And 3 will be making significant investments in Austria to make sure that that promise is kept.
