Hong Kong -- The Cheung Kong Group (consisting of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd, Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Ltd, and Hongkong Electric Ltd) today unveiled a series of donation activities geared at providing emergency relief for the Community Chest which is facing a substantial deficit this year.
Attending today's announcement press conference were Ms Katherine Hung, Executive Director of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd; Mr Leon Lai, Community Chest Campaign Committee Member; and Mr Lawrence Yu, MBE, JP, Executive Committee Chairman of the Community Chest.
The "Cheung Kong Emergency Relief Campaign for the Chest" campaign will start from May 20. The list of campaign activities includes:

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Ms Hung said, "In view of the Chest's current predicament, the Cheung Kong Group has devised a donation campaign in the hope of encouraging more people to make donations to this worthy organization."
Ms Hung continued, "The donation activities include a dollar-for-dollar donation programme, charity wine auction, charity breakfast, total day charity sale, and a charity tour. We have planned a diverse range of activities that should appeal to people from different walks of life. In this way, we hope to generate as many donations as possible."
 
Mr Yu expressed, "This year has been the most difficult one in all of the Chest's 30-year history. For the first time, we have to use our reserve for the allocation of funds to our 140 member agencies. We are very appreciative of the Cheung Kong Group's efforts and look forward to the success of the campaign. The public's support is very crucial to helping us through this trying time."

The Chest is facing a substantial deficit this year. In view of the situation that the Chest is encountering, the Cheung Kong Group, comprising Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd, Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Ltd and Hongkong Electric Holdings Ltd, have devised a donation campaign to generate contributions to the charity organization. This campaign is specially designed to encourage the public to make contributions in addition to the donations made by the Cheung Kong Group.
 
Mega star and Community Chest Campaign Committee Member, Mr Leon Lai, has kindly agreed to support the campaign by participating personally in some of the activities planned for this fundraising effort. TVB and Oriental Daily have also been very supportive by agreeing to be the media sponsors for the event.

A donation hotline (tel: 9003 0137) will be set up for the public to call for the pledging of donations to the Chest. The Cheung Kong Group will match the total amount of donations generated from the hotline.

Park'n Shop and Watson's Wine Total Charity Sale Days
 
All revenues generated at Park'n Shop and Watsons Wine in Stanley on May 23, 25 and 27 will be donated to the Chest.

Harbour Plaza Charity Breakfast
 
Mr Leon Lai will make a guest appearance and cook light breakfast entrees for guests at the Coffee Shop of the Harbour Plaza Hotel in Hunghom. All breakfast revenues generated at the Hotel's coffee shop will be donated to the Chest.
 
Afternoon
 
Leon Lai's Special Appearance at Park'n Shop
 
Mr Leon Lai will make a special appearance at Park'n Shop in Stanley and lend his personal support to the charity sale campaign.
 
Watson's Wine Charity Auctions
 
A special event will be held at the Watson's Wine Shop in Stanley where Mr Leon Lai will autograph several bottles of prestigious Bordeaux and Australian Reds, plus a bottle of Desmaurin Tres Vieux Cognac. This rarest and most outstanding 1928 vintage cognac was produced as a limited edition by the Li family cognac house in Cognac, France and retails at approximately HK$20,000 per bottle. The bottle of Desmaurin Tres Vieux Cognac Leon autographs will bear the serial number 328. This bottle of cognac together with another bottle of Desmaurin Tres Vieux Cognac bearing Mr Victor Li's autograph (serial number 333) will be auctioned off on the Community Chest Charity Show which will be broadcast on the evening of May 28 on TVB Jade. All revenues generated from the auctions will be donated to the Chest.
 
Finale Event
 
Cheung Kong Community Chest Whampoa Charity Tour
 
Mr Leon Lai and Cheung Kong Holdings Managing Director, Mr Victor Li, will lead a convoy of vehicles traveling from the new Metropolis tunnel to Whampoa Gardens. This event will mark the tunnel's first opening for traffic. Interested parties are welcome to participate in this charity tour with a donation of $500 to the Chest. Cheung Kong Group will match the total amount of donations generated from this tour.
