| In the past few years, fund raising has become
more and more difficult for The Community Chest. This year,
the Chest has to dip into the reserves to meet the request from
its member agencies for the first time in its 33 years' history.
Following the "Cheung Kong Community Chest Donation Hotline"
and the "Cheung Kong Emergency Relief Campaign for the Chest"
held in the past two years, the Cheung Kong Group will sponsor
another innovative event named "Caribbean Coast Commute for
the Chest" to raise funds for the Chest. The organisers held
a press conference today (11 June) to announce the details of
the event. Mr Lawrence K K Yu, MBE, JP, Executive Committee
Chairman of the Chest; Mr Justin Chiu, Executive Director of
Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited; and Mr Leon Lai, Member of the
Campaign Committee of the Chest officiated at the event. |
|
| "Caribbean Coast Commute for the Chest" will
be held on Friday, 13 July. The Cheung Kong Group will sponsor
each corporate team HK$88,000 to participate in this charity
event. Racing from 5 starting points - Tung Chung, Tsuen Wan,
Shatin, Kowloon Bay and Chai Wan respectively by designated
modes of transport namely via railway, buses and private mini-buses,
they need to reach the Central Post Office in as short a time
as possible to raise funds for The Community Chest. Highlights
of this competition will be covered live by Metro Broadcast
on the event day. |
|
| The Cheung Kong Group will also launch a quiz
with TVB, and Oriental Daily News & The Sun to encourage public
participation. Winners of this game will be awarded with handsome
prizes. In addition, the Cheung Kong Group will match the number
of entries of this quiz and donate HK$20 each to the Chest. |
|
| 'The Cheung Kong Group has worked closely with
the Chest on many occasions. In view of the hardships encountered
by the Chest in the past few years, the Cheung Kong Group has
actively encouraged all subsidiaries to come up with various
charity events. Through these activities, we aim to enhance
public awareness of the needs of the Chest and open up more
channels to raise funds for the needy. "Caribbean Coast Commute
for the Chest" is one of our latest charity drives,' said Mr
Justin Chiu, Executive Director of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited. |
|
| Mr Lawrence K K Yu, MBE, JP, Executive Committee
Chairman of the Chest expressed his sincere gratitude to the
sole sponsor of this event, the Cheung Kong Group. '"Caribbean
Coast Commute for the Chest" is a unique initiative. We hope
a good number of corporations will participate in this activity
and donate to a worthy cause.' |
|
| With the support of the Cheung Kong Group, the
Chest was able to allocate every dollar raised from this event
to over 140 social welfare agencies to provide comprehensive
services to over 800,000 needy without deduction of any campaign
expenses. Interested corporations are welcome to call 2122 2384
for more information and enrollment in this charity campaign. |
