October 27,
2002- Hong Kong - Built in 1904, the Rosary Church was
consecrated and inaugurated in 1905. It is the oldest
Catholic Church in Kowloon. Over the years, continuous
erosion caused by heavy rain and wet weather as well as
old and crumbling electrical wiring had made it necessary
for the Rosary Church to undergo a repair and maintenance
programme. In response to an urgent need to renovate this
unique place of worship, the Cheung Kong Group and the
Li Ka-shing family pledged to donate HK$1 for every HK$3
raised by the Rosary Church Renovation Fund. |

At a Sunday
Mass performed today, Father John B. Tsang received a
donation cheque of amount HK$1.2 million from the Managing
Director of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited Mr. Victor
Li and his wife Cynthia.
Mrs. Li said, “As a Catholic, I am very pleased
to have this opportunity to make a contribution to this
historically significant church together with other fellow
Catholics.”
Mr. Li added, “The Rosary Church is one of the major
Catholic churches in Hong Kong. In addition to providing
worship services to its congregants, the Church also offers
pastoral care to the less fortunate in our community,
including the sick, the elderly, the impoverished and
the mentally disabled. We hope that our donation would
help to bring comfort and hope to more people in Hong
Kong.”
The repair and maintenance programme is already underway
and is expected to be completed in mid-December, at which
time the Church will resume full services. |
