(May 18, 2003 – Hong Kong) Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited today made a pledge to uphold the Hygiene Charter, one of the initiatives introduced by Operation UNITE. The Hygiene Charter sets the way forward on hygiene practices for individuals and corporations across ten different sectors.

Participating in the ceremony on behalf of Cheung Kong were Executive Director Mr. Justin Chiu; General Manager of Citybase Property Management Limited, Ms. Cissy Tsang; and General Manager of Goodwell Property Management Limited, Mr. Jim Hung Kin; as well as over 100 frontline staff. Dr.Katherine Yau, Project Manager of Operation UNITE, was also present to witness the event.

Mr. Chiu said, “Cheung Kong is firmly rooted in this community. Same as all Hong Kong citizens, we are very concerned about the SARS situation. Our group of companies have launched various initiatives to the community during this period, including making a contribution of $500,000 to Operation UNITE. In support of the Hygiene Charter, our property management companies pledge to work hard with our residents, tenants and the people of Hong Kong to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment.”

Ms. Tsang added, "Since the outbreak of SARS, we have taken a number of preventive measures to put at ease the minds of our residents, tenants and shoppers. The measures taken reflect the goals expressed in the Hygiene Charter and have been greatly appreciated by all of our customers."

Mr. Jim expressed, "From a property management perspective, the Hygiene Charter, a natural progression from Operation UNITE, sets a good example for all of us. We plan to implement the measures on a long-term basis as a benefit for our staff and customers alike."

There are currently 88,000 residential units and approximately 90 million sq. ft. of retail and commercial space managed by companies under the Cheung Kong Group.

Preventive measures for residential properties

1. Place floor mats soaked with diluted household bleach at entrances.
2. Place auto-dispensing disinfectant at the entrances of every building.
3. Clean and disinfect installations such as lift buttons and intercoms every hour.
4. Staff must wash their hands thoroughly before entering a serviced apartment and take a shower before putting on a clean uniform. Staff must wear a facemask and gloves. Residents may request staff to put on protective shoe gear before entering the apartment.
5. All staff and management personnel must wear a facemask on the estate premises.
6. Bilingual information about preventive measures have been posted at the entrances.
7. Clean and disinfect air-conditioning ducts. Clean and disinfect common areas every hour.
8. Residents clubhouse and recreational facilities remain open, with equipment cleaned and disinfected every time after use.
9. A task force has been set up to handle emergencies. If a SARS case is discovered at a residential building, the case must be reported to the task force to prevent the possibility of spreading the virus.
10. Step up cleaning of all ventilation systems and installations.
11. Add disinfectant agents in flush water supply.
12. Clean and disinfect shuttle buses regularly.
13. Inspect all pipes regularly for leakage.
14. Provide free facemasks and bleach for residents.
15. Clean and disinfect car park areas.
16. Monitor all staff and contractors to ensure that they adhere to the above guidelines and those issued by the Department of Health
   
Preventive measures for retail and commercial properties
1. Place floor mats soaked with diluted household bleach at entrances.
2. Install auto-dispensing disinfectants.
3. Clean and disinfect installations such as lift buttons and intercoms every hour.
4. Open front entrance doors for fresh air. Clean and disinfect air-conditioning ducts. Clean and disinfect common areas every hour.
5. Inspect central air-conditioning system to ensure sufficient intake of fresh air; clean the system regularly.
6. Clean and disinfect toilet facilities and add disinfectant agent in flushing water system.
7. Clean and disinfect air-conditioning ducts and installations.
8. Clean and disinfect car park areas regularly.
9. Post bilingual information about preventive measures and personal hygiene.
10. Inspect indoor drainage installations for retail tenants.
11. Clean and disinfect dust filters inside the shops.
12. Provide free facemasks for tenants.
13. Monitor all staff and contractors to ensure that they adhere to the above guidelines and those issued by the Dept of Health.
14. Staff must wear protective facemask and gloves.
15. Set up a committee to organize and implement procedures and to allocate resources.
16. Set up special task force to deal with emergencies.
