[9 February 2007 - Hong Kong] - Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) and Huizhou Port Affairs Group Company Limited, today hosted a ceremony for the signing of the joint-venture agreement of Huizhou Port International Container Terminals and the operational commencement of two container quay cranes. The event took place at Quanwan Port Zone of Huizhou Port (QPZ).

The ceremony was attended by over 400 guests, representing the municipal government, local enterprises, port and shipping industries. Mr. XU Guang, the Party Secretary of Huizhou Municipal Committee of the CPC; Mr. John E. Meredith, Group Managing Director of HPH; Mr. Alfred Leung, Director of Hutchison Ports China Limited; and Mr. LIU Zi Ming, Chairman of Huizhou Port Affairs Group Company Limited, jointly hosted the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Meredith said, "With the signing of the joint-venture agreement for the construction of two new container berths in the Quanwan Port Zone of Huizhou Port, and the provision of new specialised container handling equipment, we look forward to a successful partnership with Huizhou Government and Huizhou Port Affairs Group Company Limited. We will develop Huizhou Port into one of the leading ports in South China."

The container-handling facility will have two new 50,000-tonne container berths, a total berth length of 800 metres, a yard area of 60 hectares, and depth alongside and water channel of 15.2 metres.

Upon completion of the railway extension to QPZ, large and medium cities along the two major railway arteries, Beijing-Kowloon and Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou, will have door-to-door access to the port, allowing cargo to be transported efficiently to QPZ and connect to other destinations of the world via feeder and long-haul services.

The partnership between HPH and Huizhou Port Affairs Group Company Limited began in 2006 with the investment of Huizhou Port Industrial Corporation Limited (HPIC) at QPZ. HPIC has four multi-purpose berths and five oil berths, capable of handling non-containerised goods such as refinery oil and liquefied petroleum gas as well as container and bulk cargo.

The ceremony also celebrated the operational commencement of two container quay cranes which are installed at the existing multi-purpose berths at QPZ. The equipment will help raise the productivity at QPZ and provide efficient container-handling service to feeder operators and international shipping lines.
