Hutchison reports Q3 mobile subscriber growth


Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Limited (Hutchison) today announced subscriber growth across both its Orange One and Mobile Resale businesses during the third quarter of 2000.

As at September 30, Hutchison had a total of 39,048 subscribers to its new Orange One service, up from 11,682 at June 30 and 25,142 at August 21 (when the Company's Year 2000 half year results were announced).

"Since the official launch of Orange One at the end of July, we have been greatly encouraged by the take up of the service in our Sydney and Melbourne licence areas," Hutchison Managing Director, Mr Barry Roberts-Thomson said.

"The momentum is building and we are now well on our way to establishing a wide understanding of and demand for this radically different service, which uses our own advanced CDMA network."

Mr Roberts-Thomson said that the Orange One marketing campaign was also hitting its mark with prompted awareness of Orange at 70% as of mid September, up from 38% at the time of the official launch.

Hutchison today also reported subscriber growth in its Mobile Resale business with 297,279 subscribers as at September 30, up 4% from 285,276 at June 30. Hutchison's Mobile Resale business includes resale of Cable & Wireless Optus GSM services and Telstra CDMA services.

"In total, Hutchison's digital mobile subscriber base grew 13% over the quarter from 296,958 to 336,327. This compares with industry digital mobile growth of 9% for the same period and represents a digital mobile market share of 3.7%," Mr Roberts-Thomson said.

Hutchison's total subscriber base, which includes Orange One and Mobile Resale as well as Paging and Messaging and Value Added Services was 444,670 at September 30, up 10% since June 30.
